Update:
Saturday, April 9, 2016, Bizkaia Fronton, Bilbao (Bilbo). Olaizola II--Urrutikoetxea won the Final of the Campeonatos de Parejas (doubles championship) over Mtz. de Irujo--Rezusta when Mtz de Irujo broke the middle finger of his right hand in three places in a diving attempt to save an Olaizola II cross court shot off the apron. Mtz. immediately left the floor for medical attention. He came back but after trying to use the right hand to return a shot, realized he could not continue. The match ended with the score 16-10 in favor of O-U.

Milestones:
1. This was Oliazola's 14th championship, the most for any active player.
2. At the age of 26, Urrutikoetxea has become the sixth player in the history of the sport to win all three major championships (doubles, singles and singles 4 1/2--a form we will talk about soon). He has done this in the last ten months. With this win, he also became the first front-courter in the history of the sport to win a doubles championship in the back court. His potential to dominate Mano seems unlimited.
Mtz. suffered his injury on the 399th shot of the match. The 10-10 tie was broken at this time. Up until this time, it looked like a match for the ages. A match headed toward over 800 shots, and perhaps 90 minutes. M-R came out with a strategy to work the ball deep to Urrutikoetxea and it worked for a while, as M-R built leads of 6-3 and 9-6. But it is almost impossible to avoid having to deal with Oliazola II for a whole match and he brought his team back into contention at 6-6 and then 9-9. Mtz. made two fantastic saves on the apron, one during the 3-3 point, the other during the 10-10 point, just a few moments before his injury, on a play where he slid all the way into the crowd, yet got up and got back into the flow of play. Immediately after the injury, Oliazola II served an ace, Restuza made an error, and two Oliazola II kill shots were followed by an Urrutikoetxea kill shot from behind. This was the shot that Mtz. attempted to return with his right hand; the shot that ended his day and this match.

It was very sad that such a tremendous match was truncated in this fashion. But that in no way casts a shadow on O-U. They are great and deserving champions.

Other Mano. This week we will introduce you to another kind of Mano, played in France. The French Basque country provides a vibrant Basque pelota scene. The game is administered by several agencies, the main one being the FFPV (Federation Francaise de Pelota Basque). I know of two modalities that are professional, though there may be more, and how professional these two are I haven't yet figured out. One of them is a brand of Mano called Main Nue. These matches are played on Trinquet courts. A trinquet court is a 28.5 meter court with four walls and a roof down the left side of the court. Fans sometimes sit under the roof. Here is an example of a Trinquet court. The roof is in play, as are all of the walls. This means that a long shot that on a 36 meter court might not reach the front wall, could very well if the player shoots it on the roof, where it can bounce and roll to the wall. Hard shots can be hit on the front wall to the roof, where they will bounce and/or roll, creating uncertainty. The great cross court kill shots that we have seen in Spanish Basque Mano simply carom off the right wall (or, in many places, plexiglass, so that fans can watch from behind that wall). Service rules are more liberal than in the short court game. A powerful server like Waltery (see below) can completely take over a match in a way no short court Mano server could. It makes for a different kind of game, one that can have many very long rallies intespersed with many service aces.

Two doubles semi-finals in the Championnat de France Elite Pro Trinquet Main Nue competition were played on April 8.

Note that you can access the video from there, but for me it had a tendency to stop. Use the Youtube address provided below. You have to listen closely to get the scores, as this is not a commercial TV production. There is print commentary for this match (in French) that will help you with the score. The video is excellent and gives you a very good notion of how this kind of Mano compares to the Spanish Basque Mano we have been looking at. Note that the matches are to 40 points.

Note that the order of the results was not necessarily the order the matches were played in each round.
Last week's matches solved the puzzle of who would be in the finals. None of the possible tied scenarios materialized and the #1 and #2 front court and back court were established. Gaubeka's defeat of Necol in round 5 ended the young French player's chances of reaching the final because defeating Fusto and a desparate Brefel in round 6 was a bridge too far. Although the sets were as close as any in the competition (only 4 points separated the teams after four sets), Fusto's team found a way to win, and he finished undefeated in the league phase. This defeat also ended Ibargari's chances for a place in the final. Though Imanol had to play his match with the weakest player in the tournament, they were able to win one set, and those 20 points carried Imanol into the final. Brefel, with 80 points, was able to pass Imanol to become Fusto's partner instead of his adversary.
The Innpala Twitter feed provided video coverage of the First point of the Fusto Match. How long might it be before fans will be able to see live matches through Twitter or other social media? Not very long, we hope.

Here is the Liga BBK 2015 Championship final, contested between Fusto-Aierbe and Necol-Imanol, January 2, 2016 at Bizkaia, Bilbao (Bilbo). Be sure to pay attention to Dan Necol, a new addition to the roster. Surely Fusto was hoping for another final match with Necol. Perhaps there will be in the near future.

Latest results In the VI Sagardoaren Txapleketa (Tourneo Sidra) Tournament played at Galaretta Fronton, Hernani
April 7, 2016: Beginning of the second phase of the tournament.
In the first second round elimination match:
Maxtin III-Endika (sponsored by Petritegi) defeated Matxin VI-Barrenetxea IV (sponsored by Oialume Zar) 40-37.

In a match that was marked by four long runs of points, two by each side, the Petritegi side had the last run, a 9-0 run that erased a 33-29 deficit and sealed the victory. In addition to the 9-0 run at the end of the match, M-E also had a 9-1 run at the beginning of the match and a 7-1 run in the middle of the match, both crucial to staying in touch with their opponents. Without these two earlier runs, the game would have long been over by the time the Petritigi team reached 29 points. The Oialume Zar team's runs (7-2; and 11-2) were also impressive. At the end of their 11-2 run, they had a seven point lead (18-25), which was the biggest lead for either team. These kind of matches are always fascinating. How can one team be so dominant, and then itself be dominated, for so long a period of time? And like so many sporting contests, the team that had the last run won. This game was also interesting in that the back courters dominated the scoring. Endika and Barrenetxea accounted for 35 winners between them (Endika had 17). And Barrenetxea led a last minute rally to try to get the Oliazume Zar team back in the match, but it was not enough. The match story notes that both front courters (who are brothers) had forgettable matches. But it was a match with a wonderful and exciting ebb and flow, very close, Few first phase matches provided this level of drama. M-E are now 2 wins and 2 losses in the tournament. They now move on to the next round, while the Oialume Zar team finishes with a record of 1 victory and 3 defeats.

Uterga-Aizpuru III (sponsored by Bereziartua) defeated Segurola (substituting for the injured Zeberio II)-Zubiri (sponsored by Larre-Gain) 40-29.

This match marked the end of Segurola's 7 match winning streak that began on March 17. Since February 27 he had won 11 of 12. According to the match report, Segurola had a great game. But so did Uterga, the Bereziartua front courter. Between them they had 31 winners (Segurola 15) and only 7 errors (Segurola 3). The difference in the match was the performance of the Bereziartua back courter Aizpuru III, who had 12 winners, 5 service aces, and only 4 errors (3 of which hit either just below or just above the front wall markers). From these numbers I came up with numbers for Zubiri that would equal the final score. Whether these numbers are correct or not, I do not know. The Larre-Gain team ends the tournament with 0 wins 4 losses. The Bereziartua team moves on to the quarter-finals with a 2 and 2 record.
Uterga: 16 winners, 4 errors.
Segurola: 15 winners, 3 errors.

Joko-Garbi is an ancestral form of Jai Alai. Melchor Guruceaga, a late 19th Century "pelotari", broke his wrist in a match in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1887. In order to make it easier to play, he adapted a "cesta" of the time, made it longer, narrower, and deeper, allowing the ball to be "caught" rather than hit. In time, this evolved into the Jai Alai cestas of today. The sport Guruceaga played was called Joko-Garbi (clean game), and Guruceaga's innovation changed the sport. The story can be found here. I have used Google translate for ease of understanding. The translation is cumbersome but effective. There is a picture of Guruceaga and his innovation at the bottom of the story. Below that there is a picture of today's Jai Alai cesta. Joko-Garbi is still played at a highly organized level in France, administered by FFPB. The match you will see is an excellent example of this modality.

So quickly that I was completely fooled when I first watched the match you will see. That was filmed from the back, and looked to me like a racquet sport. One of my Basque correspondents explained the true nature of the game to me, but I didn't see it until I watched this example.
